The dam was constructed around 1912.
Indiana Michigan Power announced in early 2025 that it was evaluating the future of the Johnson Street Dam due to maintenance costs. The review includes the possibility of decommissioning the hydroelectric structure and changing how the Saint Joseph River is managed in this section.
